Starting from Kilimanjaro Airport, you’ll fly west, swap roads for boats, and step into one of Africa’s most remote corners. By day, trek with guides through emerald forests to watch chimpanzees up close in their natural home; by evening, chill lakeside with golden sunsets and starry skies. Itinerary:
Day 1: Fly from Moshi (JRO)/Arusha(ARK) to Kigoma
- Pick-up from your hotel, drop off at the airport (JRO/ARK based on availability and your travel dates). Take your flight to Kigoma.
- Transfer to the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
- Sleep in a lakeside lodge (Kigoma). Chill with sunset drinks overlooking the world’s longest freshwater lake.
Day 2: Boat Ride to Mahale & First Forest Walk
- Scenic boat transfer (2–3 hours) along the lake to Mahale Mountains.
- Settle into your camp/lodge on the beach—sand at your feet, forest at your back.
- Afternoon guided forest walk to spot colobus monkeys, birds, and butterflies.
- Evening relaxation and dinner under the stars. Sleep in Mahale.
Day 3: Full Chimpanzee Trekking Experience
- Early start for a guided trek into Mahale’s rainforest to track wild chimpanzees.
- Spend precious hours observing their family dynamics, grooming rituals, and playful energy.
- Return for a lakeside lunch and optional swim in crystal-clear Tanganyika.
- Optional Sunset dhow cruise or storytelling by the campfire (extra fee 80 USD)
- Sleep in Mahale.
Day 4: Mahale -> Kigoma -> Kilimanjaro
- Breakfast by the lake, last chance for a short walk or swim.
- Boat transfer back to Kigoma.
- Afternoon flight from Kigoma → JRO/ARK and drop-off at your accommodation.
