Join us on an epic 7 or 8-day Machame Route trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, the “Whiskey Route” known for its stunning views and wild camping. With extra acclimatization days, you’ve got a 90–95% shot at Uhuru Peak (vs. 60% for shorter routes). Itinerary:

Day 0: Arrival

  • Land at JRO, transfer to Moshi/Arusha (∼1 hr). Briefing, gear check, optional rentals. 
  • Sleep: Chanya Lodge, Moshi. Food: Dinner. Elevation: ∼900m. Tip: Rest and prep gear for the adventure. 

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Drive to Machame Gate (1,800m), register, hike through rainforest to camp. 
  • Distance: 11km. Time: 5–6 hrs. Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m. 
  • Sleep: Machame Camp (tents). Food: Lunch, dinner. Tip: Pack rain gear. 

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • Trek to moorland, climb to Shira Plateau with Kibo views. 
  • Distance: 5km. Time: 4–5 hrs. Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m. 
  • Sleep: Shira Camp (tents). Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Stay hydrated. 

Day 3: Shira Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

  • Hike to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, descend to Barranco Camp. 
  • Distance: 10km. Time: 6–7 hrs. Elevation: 3,840m to 3,950m. 
  • Sleep: Barranco Camp (3,960 m, tents). Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Enjoy Lava Tower views. 

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Climb Barranco Wall, trek to Karanga Valley with Kibo views. 
  • Distance: 5km. Time: 4–5 hrs. Elevation: 3,950m to 4,000m. 
  • Sleep: Karanga Camp (tents). Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Tackle the Wall slowlyGroup 2864, Grouped object

Day 5: Extra Acclimatization Night at Karange Camp (Skip this step for the 7-day version)

  • this is among the two most popular camps to stay an extra night to allow the body to adjust to the altitude. The camp is high enough to strengthen acclimatization before Barafu, but not as punishing as spending two nights in Barafu itself.
  • Option hikes on this day to 4,400-4,600 m as a practice and back.
  • Distance: 0–3km. Time: 0–2 hrs. Elevation: 4,035m. 
  • Sleep: Karange Camp (tents). Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Rest for altitude prep. 

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Hike to alpine desert, reach Barafu Camp, rest for summit. 
  • Distance: 4km. Time: 3–4 hrs. Elevation: 4,000m to 4,670m. 
  • Sleep: Barafu Camp (tents). Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Prep for midnight climb. Group 2864, Grouped object

Day 7: Barafu Camp to summit the Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Midnight wake up and climb to Stella Point (5,739m), then Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise.
  • Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.
  • Distance: 17km (5km up, 12km down). Time: 6–8 hrs up, 4–6 hrs down. 
  • Elevation: 4,670m to 5,895m to 3,100m. Sleep: Mweka Camp (tents). 
  • Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tip: Pace yourself, watch scree descent. Group 2864, Grouped object

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi

  • FIninalize your descend to Mweka Gate (1,640m), get certificate, drive to Moshi/Arusha (∼1 hr). 
  • Distance: 10km. Time: 3–4 hrs. Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m. 
  • Sleep: Chanya Lodge or similar lodge of your choosing, Moshi. Food: Breakfast, lunch. Tip: Tip crew.
