Kilimanjaro National Park

Standing at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level, Kilimanjaro National Park is home to Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing peak. Rising above the surrounding plains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts adventurers from around the globe seeking breathtaking landscapes, unforgettable trekking experiences, and the chance to stand on the Roof of Africa.

Location:

Located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, Kilimanjaro National Park lies approximately 70 km (43 miles) from Moshi and around 80 km (50 miles) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park protects Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding montane forests, making it one of Tanzania's most iconic landmarks.

Size:

The national park covers approximately 1,688 km² (652 sq mi), encompassing Mount Kilimanjaro's volcanic cone, alpine moorlands, glaciers, and lush mountain forests. Its remarkable elevation creates five distinct ecological zones, each offering a unique landscape as you ascend towards the summit.

Seasons:

  • Dry Season (January – March & June – October): The most popular periods for climbing, offering clearer skies, stable weather, and excellent summit conditions.
  • Season to avoid (April – May): This is the time of long rains when trails can become extremely muddy and slippery. Visibility is poor and conditions cold and wet. The park is open all-year-round, but we generally avoid climbing during these two months.
  • Green Season (November): The mountain becomes lush and vibrant, though rainfall increases and trekking conditions can be more challenging.

Best time to visit:

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but January to March and June to October generally provide the best weather and visibility.

January to March offers quieter trails and cooler temperatures near the summit, while June to October is the busiest season with excellent climbing conditions and spectacular panoramic views.

Highlights:

  • Home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain
  • The world's tallest free-standing mountain
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987
  • Five distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to Arctic summit

Landscapes & Wildlife:

  • Moorland: giant groundsels, lobelias, and dramatic volcanic scenery
  • Alpine Desert: vast open landscapes shaped by volcanic rock and high-altitude conditions
  • Arctic Summit: glaciers, ice fields, and the iconic Uhuru Peak
  • Birdlife: more than 180 recorded bird species within the park

Your Kilimanjaro Experience

Your journey begins beneath a canopy of ancient rainforest, where birdsong fills the morning air, and colobus monkeys move gracefully through the trees. With every step, the landscape transforms - from lush forest to open heath, alpine desert, and finally the snow-capped summit that has inspired climbers for generations.

Summit night is both challenging and unforgettable. Under a sky filled with countless stars, you ascend slowly through the darkness before reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise. As the first light spreads across East Africa, clouds stretch below your feet, and glaciers glow in shades of gold and blue - a moment that rewards every step of the journey.

Whether you're celebrating a personal milestone or chasing the adventure of a lifetime, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is far more than reaching a summit. It's an experience of determination, discovery, and extraordinary natural beauty.
