Location:
Located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, Kilimanjaro National Park lies approximately 70 km (43 miles) from Moshi and around 80 km (50 miles) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park protects Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding montane forests, making it one of Tanzania's most iconic landmarks.
Size:
The national park covers approximately 1,688 km² (652 sq mi), encompassing Mount Kilimanjaro's volcanic cone, alpine moorlands, glaciers, and lush mountain forests. Its remarkable elevation creates five distinct ecological zones, each offering a unique landscape as you ascend towards the summit.
Seasons:
- Dry Season (January – March & June – October): The most popular periods for climbing, offering clearer skies, stable weather, and excellent summit conditions.
- Season to avoid (April – May): This is the time of long rains when trails can become extremely muddy and slippery. Visibility is poor and conditions cold and wet. The park is open all-year-round, but we generally avoid climbing during these two months.
- Green Season (November): The mountain becomes lush and vibrant, though rainfall increases and trekking conditions can be more challenging.
Best time to visit:
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but January to March and June to October generally provide the best weather and visibility.
January to March offers quieter trails and cooler temperatures near the summit, while June to October is the busiest season with excellent climbing conditions and spectacular panoramic views.
