Itinerary:

Day 1: Karatu - Ngorongoro Highlands - Olmoti or Empakaai Crater

  • After breakfast, depart from Karatu and drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
  • Begin the trek at Olmoti Crater (for most 3-day routes) or Empakaai Crater (for 4-day or customized starts).
  • Enjoy scenic hiking through forested paths and open grasslands, with views of waterfalls, crater floors, and surrounding highlands.
  • Picnic lunch along the trail.
  • Overnight: Highland campsite near Olmoti or Empakaai Crater.

Day 2: Highlands Trek - Empakaai Crater - Maasai Villages

  • Continue trekking across the Ngorongoro Highlands, passing rolling hills, volcanic landscapes, and Maasai settlements.
  • Descend into Empakaai Crater to explore the soda lake, often home to flamingos and water birds.
  • Afternoon walk along the crater rim with panoramic views.
  • Overnight: Empakaai Campsite or nearby camping area

Day 3: Empakaai - Acacia Camp/Nayobi Village - Rift Valley Views

  • Trek southward through open highland terrain toward Acacia Camp or Nayobi Village.
  • Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of the Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, and distant Lake Natron.
  • Opportunities to interact with local Maasai communities and learn about their traditional lifestyle.
  • For 3-day option: Meet vehicle near Acacia/Nayobi for scenic transfer back to Karatu (with optional Maasai village stop).
  • For 4-day option: Overnight at campsite or basic lodge in the descent area/near Rift Valley base.

Day 4 (Optional): Lake Natron Exploration - Return to Karatu/Arusha

  • For travelers choosing the 4-day trek, descend further toward Lake Natron.
  • Early morning exploration of the lake area, flamingo habitats, and nearby waterfalls.
